Personality: You may pick five of our questions below to answer as your personality section of the application. Keep the word count to 100-300 per question, please!
Like three of these are going to end up being about Akechi, please prepare yourselves.
► What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
Rebellious. ...At least around his friends. To adults and outsiders, he seems quiet, well-mannered, a perfectly nice boy, so long as his reputation doesn't precede him. It's not quite a complete lie, because he really is the sort of guy who wants to help people and do good. But it is mostly a very impressive ruse. He's aggressive and arrogant, snarky and playful, defiant and rebellious, determined and courageous, but does what he can to not draw attention to himself unnecessarily, relying on keeping his mouth shut. He's a little rebellious shit partially from realizing he can do good and help people in a better way by stepping outside of society's guidelines, but also partially because every adult in his life at the beginning of his probation treats him like garbage. Why not cause havoc at that point? Why not break the law to do the right thing? Because, after all, it seems like it's the only way anything gets done.
He absolutely has a moral code, but it doesn't align with Adult Society™️ super well. He's not the type to sit down and shut up when there are real stakes; Ren's going to stand up and scream. His tendency to stand up against injustice and unfairness, despite the risks to himself, shows that he clearly has a strong moral code, it's just different from the average law abiding citizen's. Ren thoroughly understands he's breaking the law, but doesn't really care because he also thoroughly understands he's doing the right thing. To put him on a D&D morality scale: Ren's Chaotic Neutral, leaning Chaotic Good; he's into freedom and individuality, and is more than happy to break laws if it means helping others.
► What would make the character happiest? What is their ultimate goal?
[ gesturing wildly at Persona 5 Royal's third semester ]
So. Ren's biggest wish in the world is to stay in Tokyo, at Leblanc, with his friends, have Akechi re-alived, and get to continue being a Phantom Thief. He actually gets to have all that in one of the endings, if he sides with Maruki in the end. It's just a horribly fucked option because Akechi literally might as well be begging him for the sweet release of death. Luckily for everyone wanting to not live in a deluded dreamscape, Ren is mostly selfless enough to sacrifice his own happiness for others. ...But like the second he decides it's his fucking turn for happiness, Ren's actually quite capable of downright evil decisions.
► If they had to sacrifice their own life to save someone else, would they do it? Why, or why not? Where do they draw the line?
Absolutely he would do it. Ren's done a whole laundry list of similar things. His criminal record (the first assault) is kicked off entirely because he was trying to save a woman from being coerced into a car by a creepy guy. Kamoshida's change of heart was kicked off to help Ryuji, Ann, Shiho, and Mishima. Madarame's was to help Yusuke. Kaneshiro's was to help Makoto, Futaba's was for her, etc. He fancies himself a hero, of course he's going to step into the line of fire to save others. There's no line; Ren will easily and willingly risk his own skin for other people.
► What was the darkest point of your character's life?
He's going through that point pretty much right now. Ren just had to turn himself in and confess to keep Shido in jail, therefore being in jail and having a criminal record for the rest of his life. He had to save the world from Maruki's Nothing Bad Has Ever Happened Ever reality, which got rid of everyone's Persona and killed Akechi. Even when he's released from prison, he doesn't get to stay in Tokyo with his friends and support system. And that's all after nearly a year of hell after his parents sent him off while he was on probation for assault. A lot of things have piled up and are crashing down and if he wasn't already in prison he'd be on an involuntary psychiatric hold right about now, okay.
► Who is the most important person in your character's life? How has that person impacted them?
Akechi, no question. All of his confidants are important, yes, but Akechi holds a special position in his heart, and not because of any reason you might be thinking. The truth is Akechi's the one Ren has to cope with losing. Akechi gets shot and dies, and Ren's biggest wish in the world (which the biggest, worst bad of the game gives him for a time) is getting Akechi back and getting to stay with everyone in Tokyo. As a Persona protag, Ren's known for wearing many masks and being able to slip in and out of the wildest social situations. Akechi almost becomes this symbol to Ren, of success and failure in equal measure; Akechiloves respects him for being his rebellious arrogant self, and in turn Ren respects Akechi for being the angry little gremlin he is underneath his manufactured celebrity personality.
Roommates?: One.
Triggers/sensitive topics you'd like to avoid?: Cockroaches, but like. I can also just deal with it as long as I don't have to see pictures lmao
